Cool Cameos.

3 Aug

When I was very young, people used to tell me ridiculous things and I used to believe them.  My best friend Allie (the bride-to-be in this post) convinced me once that there were elves living in her basement who would leave us markers and coloring books to play with.  Come to think of it, it was also Allie that told me that if I stood on a beach towel in the middle of her living room her dog wouldn’t be able to come near me. (I came from a house with disinterested cats and a dog the same size as me really freaked me out.)  The point is that I’ll participate in some rather fantastical ideas without much question.

One of the most vivid memories of mine as a child believing in some kind of magic was playing at my great-aunt and uncle’s home which always seemed to me to be some kind of fairy tale forest.  There was a single day I remember playing with another girl about my age who was also visiting the house.  I would never be able to tell you her name or why exactly she was there.  (While writing this, I am starting to really hope that I didn’t make her up too.)  She had a little pendant that was peach colored with a white cameo on it and it was like nothing I had ever seen.  This chick told me some story about how the cameo was magic and would tell us where to go on a journey through the woods, leading us on a wonderful adventure.  I think we got about as far as my uncle’s woodworking shed a mere 50 feet from the house before being called in for dinner.

So when I came across this incredible take on the traditional cameo on Shopbop the other day, it really got me excited about the whimsy of this style of carving and how cool it looks mixed with modern fashion.

This find obviously led me on the search for other cool cameo objects:

Take Me To Three Floor.

26 Jul

The first time I came across Three Floor was a couple of months ago, when one of my favorite bloggers, Sincerely Jules, featured the most delightful yellow dress that I immediately started having fashion panic attacks over.  In no current universe could I ever think about being able to effectively wear bright yellow and a very low frill on a dress without looking like an actual lemon.  But this dress made me think that maybe it was worth it.

In the end, I didn’t invest in the dress but I did discover the label, Three Floor, was not only affordable but packed full of adorably quirky designs that made me squeal with delight.  Their looks are youthfully ladylike and their usage of not just color but huge attention to exciting and unexpected details makes them incredibly unique.  And with no offense intended for the rest of the world, that can sometimes be where new (and affordable) labels otherwise fall flat.

Here are some of my fav looks from the current collection online:

And great news, ladies and nerds, Three Floor can now be found on everyone’s favorite and most dangerous e-commerce site, Shopbop :)

Birthday Wishlist.

24 May

There are a couple of things I should preface this post with:

1. It is still about 5 weeks until my birthday but I thought I might as well give a heads up to anyone keen on spoiling me for my birthday.  Thank you in advance.

2. I know this is an incredibly materialistic post and that is its only intention.  What I really want and hope for the coming year comes in the form of happiness and success and achieving the goals I’ve set out for myself.  This past year was spent making some massive life changes and preparing for the ‘next big chapter’.  The biggest birthday wish I have is that it is as wonderful as I picture it being.

BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN I WILL IGNORE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAY I WANT OTHERWISE RIDICULOUS MATERIAL POSSESSIONS.

So here it is!  Drum roll please!  :)

Gold Marc Jacobs mouse flats. Obviously.

Previously mentioned Pamela Love for J. Crew jean jacket.

Celine Mini Luggage Bag in red. (You can only visit it in-store. It’s liking having to go to the zoo to see the penguins.)

Custom-made light artwork.

A hand-made leather owl mask. (Leave me alone. I want what I want.)

Adorable vases with attitude.

Valentino’s coveted studs.

A cute and somehow sexy Cynthia Rowley dress.

I ask for this Mawi necklace at every possible opportunity. Though it is ‘out of stock’ I still dream about it materializing in front of me. Sigh.

And tickets to this show on Broadway paying tribute to one of the greatest films, in my opinion, ever made.

The truth is that this year is one of the first years of my adult life that I am very seriously looking forward to my birthday.  Usually I get a bit weird about throwing myself a party and though I am always so touched at the response of those who love me, it can get a bit stressful.  But thanks to my very lovely friends in London and impeccable timing on the part of the beautiful Saint Saviour, this year I get to celebrate my making it through another year by getting to be with the people I adore at an event for someone else.  Saint Saviour, who I have written about COUNTLESS times on the blog (here, here and here), will be hosting an intimate album launch gig on my 29th and I get to go see her work her magic while being able to hug my friends as much as I bloody well like.  What more could a girl want?  (Aside from gold ballet flats with mice faces on them.)

Pretty Cute, Rebecca Minkoff.

19 Apr

It is no secret that Rebecca Minkoff is on her way up.  Her show at the most recent New York Fashion Week was a total spectacle (you can read about it here) and reviews for her collections have been gaining momentum.  The girl is doing damn well for herself.  And this doesn’t go amiss when it comes to her accessories collection…most specifically her handbags and wallets.  I’ve been seriously impressed with what I have been seeing and Ms. Minkoff has spoken to my silly sensibilities with a line of wallets that offers just the right amount of giggles.

Have a favorite?  I’m torn between ‘Benjamins’ and ‘This is mine, not yours’  :)

Beautiful Bows.

1 Feb

I came across these Viktor & Rolf heels the other day and nearly fell off my bed.  And for the record, yes, I woke up at 5:30am and thought it would be a good idea to go shoe shopping on the world-wide web.

Sigh.  I’ll take them in both colors.  In my dreams.

Prints Charming.

23 Jan

With Chanel setting a pretty strong tone at the start (I freaked out about it here), it has to be said that designers have really brought their ‘A’ games to Pre-Fall 2012.

Two collections that I have previously never spent much time thinking about, Just Cavalli and Matthew Williamson, both really took me by surprise.  Both known for using prints, I always have it in my head, potentially for good reason, that they always go a bit too far and make very expensive clothes look very cheap.  But I am happy to report that, for now at least, I am eating my words.  I am kinda loving what both design houses delivered.

JUST CAVALLI

MATTHEW WILLIAMSON
