Resort 2014: Volume Deux.

7 Jun

Resort 2014 collections keep flooding in and every moment I think ‘yes, I have conquered the collections and can now sit back and write a delightful little round-up on them’…there are another 10 shows to browse.  Now, I am in no way complaining.  I could look at new collections all day, every day despite the heart racing that ensues from not being able to run out and buy everything I want.  Keep an eye out over the next week on installments of Resort 2014 that, in my humble opinion, are totally worth obsessing over.  Next up…

Burberry Prorsum does it again.  Giving endless credit to this label, you always know when you are looking at a Burberry collection with the tight pencil skirts, classic trenches and perfectly placed jackets.  But there is always something that makes it THAT much better than the collection before.  This collection struck a perfect chord on the color palette, made sheer lace look totally classy and empowered daytime sequins.  I want to be THIS kind of Burberry girl.

While the Jill Stuart collection didn’t set my heart alight, I love this designer and I loved this look above.  What Jill Stuart epitomizes is the grown-up girl…meaning, she dresses for women who never lose their sense of feminine and childish whimsy.  Augh, that word…whimsy.  Her detailing is what really sets her apart and while I wasn’t a fan of bright pink rosettes and white Jacquard skirts, this little black number with stand-out scalloping and bow just seems perfect.

Speaking of daytime sequins…hey, Marc Jacobs!  My take on this collection is ‘Gatsby on a sailing trip with very sensible shoes’.  Nautical stripes were approached a bit differently.  MJ wanted to make sure no one had to worry about getting their heel caught in the dock.  And I assume this lookbook will beg the question, is Marc Jacobs thinking about moving into interiors with those delightful fluffy pillows?!  I mean, he does everything else, I’m sure he could fit in a home line.

Come on, Zac Posen, let’s go to the ball!  Honestly, I am not sure what I can even say about this collection other than ‘woah’ and ‘I think Mr. Posen actually decided on creating his own editorial shoot instead of a lookbook that Vogue may have to just copy and paste’.  So that happened.

And now for something a bit more accessible…Nicole Miller.  Generally, this designer delivers looks for what I like to think of as the polished cool girl.  She’s got some edge, she’s not afraid to show it but she also doesn’t need to be too massively in your face about it. I didn’t totally get that from this collection.  Where some of the prints and looks skewed a bit trashy if I didn’t know where it was from, there were a few nails that were hit upon their head.  Above.

Everyone, look!  Look how cool Fendi is!  I don’t even know where to start and I also don’t want to write a whole essay because, I promise you, it would start to get weird.  With patterns and super saturated colors that are a bit in your face, Fendi used this collection to not overwhelm but to introduce an element of ‘badass-ness’ that I haven’t associated with the brand for a while.  Everything about this collection is just so freaking cool.  Shapes are just the right stand-out style, skin is shown in the most perfect spots and it’s obvious Fendi is having fun, without begging you to join them.  Which is a bit of what fashion is all about, non?

There was something delightfully nostalgic about the Erdem collection for Resort 2014.  And refreshingly so.  It was all very updated 50s in shape, style and with pattern and embellishment…but I couldn’t help but find myself a little giddy over it all.  Now, this could have something to do with how much attitude the models in this shoot are giving it, of course, but when you see a collection so perfectly thought-out and executed, it has to make you happy.

Psst…we have a great giveaway coming up on this week’s Etsy Monday so make sure to come back and check it out!

Marc by Marc Jacobs & Marc Jacobs Fall 2013: The King of Everything.

18 Feb

When you ask someone who the living greats of fashion design are, you’re sure to get the classic answers: Oscar, Karl, Ralph, Valentino…  But up there with the seasoned legends is a reasonably younger designer who is actually trumping all the others at the moment is Marc Jacobs.  His Marc by Marc Jacobs show for Fall 2013 had ‘cool girl’ refinement down to perfection.  It felt like a bit of a change for this one of Marc’s collections.  It was subdued but it worked.  Hair and make-up direction was obviously ‘sex it up’ and against 40′s style silhouettes, it all worked together seamlessly.

But in a way, it had to.  Not just to send out a good collection for Marc by Marc Jacobs, but to cover the designer’s ass as he was already at the center of one of the most controversial moments of NYFW…  It is UNHEARD of to move a show.  Especially when the show is only a few days away.  As some designers were scrambling to beat the elements (i.e. a complete bastard of a blizzard), the MJ camp was dealing with delayed deliveries of, well, basically all of his signature Marc Jacobs collection.  Pressure was on.  And to be expected, Marc Jacobs did not disappoint.  In fact, the Marc Jacobs shows proved to be one of the most incredible of the entire week.  While many of the looks deemed wearing trousers superfluous, and in one case, no top required, it was a stunning show.  In summary, get your sequins out, bitches.  It’s time to shiiine.

Chris Benz Resort 2013: The Fun of Being a Girl.

10 Jun

Chris Benz has all the elements of someone who I think is awesome.  He attended Parsons where I have been enjoying being a student for the last year.  He was an intern at Marc Jacobs (cool) and went on to work for J. Crew (double cool) and he obviously just wants to have some good old-fashioned fun.  Going through the images of the Chris Benz Resort collection, there is an obvious nod back to a delightfully nostalgic 1950s South Beach and you just want to jump into the clothes and participate.  There is a certain degree of playing dress up while being ever so serious about how fashionable you are when it comes to this collection.

I think it would be rather difficult for some of us ‘common people’ to pull off some of these looks but by golly I’ll appreciate them and I’ll probably try.  Martini, anyone?

Birthday Wishlist.

24 May

There are a couple of things I should preface this post with:

1. It is still about 5 weeks until my birthday but I thought I might as well give a heads up to anyone keen on spoiling me for my birthday.  Thank you in advance.

2. I know this is an incredibly materialistic post and that is its only intention.  What I really want and hope for the coming year comes in the form of happiness and success and achieving the goals I’ve set out for myself.  This past year was spent making some massive life changes and preparing for the ‘next big chapter’.  The biggest birthday wish I have is that it is as wonderful as I picture it being.

BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN I WILL IGNORE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAY I WANT OTHERWISE RIDICULOUS MATERIAL POSSESSIONS.

So here it is!  Drum roll please!  :)

Gold Marc Jacobs mouse flats. Obviously.

Previously mentioned Pamela Love for J. Crew jean jacket.

Celine Mini Luggage Bag in red. (You can only visit it in-store. It’s liking having to go to the zoo to see the penguins.)

Custom-made light artwork.

A hand-made leather owl mask. (Leave me alone. I want what I want.)

Adorable vases with attitude.

Valentino’s coveted studs.

A cute and somehow sexy Cynthia Rowley dress.

I ask for this Mawi necklace at every possible opportunity. Though it is ‘out of stock’ I still dream about it materializing in front of me. Sigh.

And tickets to this show on Broadway paying tribute to one of the greatest films, in my opinion, ever made.

The truth is that this year is one of the first years of my adult life that I am very seriously looking forward to my birthday.  Usually I get a bit weird about throwing myself a party and though I am always so touched at the response of those who love me, it can get a bit stressful.  But thanks to my very lovely friends in London and impeccable timing on the part of the beautiful Saint Saviour, this year I get to celebrate my making it through another year by getting to be with the people I adore at an event for someone else.  Saint Saviour, who I have written about COUNTLESS times on the blog (here, here and here), will be hosting an intimate album launch gig on my 29th and I get to go see her work her magic while being able to hug my friends as much as I bloody well like.  What more could a girl want?  (Aside from gold ballet flats with mice faces on them.)

Marc Jacobs vs. Topshop.  A lovely way to bring a little bit of designer influence to the masses or a cheap copycat move?

Gone a bit Gatsby.

25 Jan

It has been no secret that one of the major trends we have seen for the upcoming S/S season is a throwback to the romance of the Gatsby era.  Which is impeccable timing for the remake of Gatsby currently filming, but less so for me.  I am currently looking out the window at the first major snowfall of the winter (that freak storm in October doesn’t count) and even I, notorious for not knowing how to appropriately dress for weather conditions, know that I have to wait to properly embrace this look.

Here are some of my favorite looks from the runways…

I think it’s pretty plain to see that I am a huge fan of dresses.  Here are some slightly more wallet-friendly options that can be worn on the day-to-day…

I have a good feeling that as we start to properly move into the season and the weather begins to turn, we are going to see quite a few gorgeous party dresses hit the racks.  I will be dusting off a flapper-style dress that I bought from the first Kate Moss for Topshop collection, fo sho.  What I’m saying is…I’m going to be buying some pretty ridiculous dresses come springtime so I am expecting some party invites  :)
